What makes an installation last?

• Pitch. About a quarter inch of fall every ten feet. Too little and it stands; too much and it looks wrong and overshoots at the outlet.
• Hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, roughly every two feet, instead of spikes and ferrules. Spikes work loose — that is why old gutters sag in the middle.

• Outlets sized and placed for the run, sealed properly at the trough.

How is the fascia checked before hanging?

Gutter is only as good as what it is screwed to. Before hanging we probe the fascia along the run, because the board behind a failing gutter has usually been wet for years. Where it is soft, it is replaced — hanging new aluminium on rotted wood is money thrown away.

What about drip edge and the roof edge?

Water should leave the shingle, cross the drip edge and land in the trough. Without drip edge it wicks backwards onto the fascia and behind the gutter, which rots the board and the sheathing edge even though the gutter itself is fine.

If your roof has no drip edge we will say so during the gutter quote. It is a small item that prevents an expensive one.
