What do soffit and fascia actually do?

The fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge that the gutter hangs from. The soffit is the horizontal underside of the overhang. Together they close the roof edge and carry the intake half of your attic ventilation.

That ventilation role is the part most people miss. Blocked or solid soffit means no intake air, which means ridge vents pull from inside the house instead, the attic runs warm and damp, and you get ice dams and condensation on the sheathing.
