Siding Repair vs Replacement & the Matching Problem | Roof Gutter Now

Siding Repair vs Replacement (and the Matching Problem)

The repair question usually turns into a matching question. Most homeowners find that out too late.

Damaged siding looks like a simple repair until you try to buy the panel. Colour fades, profiles get discontinued, and a patched elevation in a near-match reads worse than the damage did. That is where the matching question — and Ohio’s rule on it — becomes the whole conversation. Related: siding repair.

When Repair Is Genuinely the Right Call

Isolated damage on one elevation with panels still available, no moisture behind the wall, and a profile still in production. A few cracked panels from a stray ball or a single hail-struck section repairs cleanly and nobody will ever see it. We would rather do that job than sell you an elevation you do not need.

When It Is Not

Once moisture has been getting behind the panels, the question stops being cosmetic. Damp sheathing, compromised house wrap, or rot at the bottom course means opening the wall regardless. Widespread hail bruising across multiple elevations also fails the repair test, because patching a field of impacts leaves a visibly mottled wall.

Check first: pull one damaged panel and look at the wrap behind it. What the wall is doing behind the siding matters more than what the panel looks like.

The Matching Problem

Vinyl and metal siding fade with UV exposure. Even where the exact product is still made, a new panel beside twenty-year-old panels will not match, and manufacturers routinely discontinue colours and profiles after a decade. So a technically successful repair can still leave a wall that looks patched from the street — which matters for resale and for how a claim gets settled.

What Ohio’s Matching Rule Says

Ohio Administrative Code 3901-1-54 addresses uniformity in property claims. In practice, when damaged material cannot reasonably be matched to the undamaged material, the argument exists for replacing to a reasonable line of demarcation rather than patching a mismatch into the middle of an elevation. This is the single most useful lever in a siding claim, and it turns on evidence rather than opinion.

Evidence StepWhy It Matters
ITEL match test reportIndependent finding on whether a match exists
Documented repair attemptShows matching was tried, not assumed impossible
Photographs of both elevationsDemonstrates visible mismatch
Discontinuation confirmationEstablishes the product is unavailable

How We Handle It

We order the closest available panel and physically test the match rather than asserting it cannot be done, because a carrier is entitled to see that the attempt was made. Where ITEL confirms no reasonable match exists, that report plus photographs supports the uniformity argument. See matching siding and roofing claims and siding damage claims. We are contractors, not public adjusters or lawyers — the coverage decision belongs to your carrier.

Free, photographed inspection — no obligation. We document what we find and put the scope in writing before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can damaged siding just be patched?

Where the profile and colour are still available and there is no moisture behind the wall, yes. The complication is usually matching rather than the repair itself.

What if my siding colour is discontinued?

That is where the matching argument applies. An independent ITEL match report documenting that no reasonable match exists supports replacing to a line of demarcation rather than patching a visible mismatch.

What is Ohio’s siding matching rule?

Ohio Administrative Code 3901-1-54 deals with uniformity in property claims. It is the provision most often relied on when damaged material cannot reasonably be matched to what is undamaged.

Will new siding match my faded siding?

Usually not exactly. UV exposure changes the colour of the existing panels over years, so even the identical product from the same manufacturer will read differently beside them.

Does insurance cover full siding replacement?

It depends on the damage, the policy and whether a reasonable match exists. Documentation of the failed match attempt is what moves that conversation.

Should I file a claim for hail-damaged siding?

If the documented damage exceeds your deductible, generally yes. We photograph and document either way and will tell you honestly when a claim is not worth filing.

Not sure whether you need this yet? A free inspection settles it in writing.
