Ice Dams Start in the Attic: The Building Science Behind the Ice on Your Roof

Ice at the eave is a symptom. The cause is warm air leaking into a cold attic. Here is what the research says, and what it means for your house this winter.

The short version
  • Air leakage from the house into the attic is often the main way heat reaches the roof deck.
  • Insulation alone does not fix an attic that leaks air.
  • University of Minnesota Extension specifically advises against powered attic fans as an ice dam fix.

Homeowners tend to think of ice dams as a roofing defect. They are usually a building envelope defect that happens to show up on the roof.

Where the heat comes from

Building Science Digest 135 separates the causes into three buckets: heat conducted through insufficient insulation, heat carried by air leaking through gaps in the ceiling plane, and uneven snow depth that creates warm and cold zones on its own. The air leakage path is the one most people underestimate. Warm, moist indoor air rises through recessed light cans, attic hatches, plumbing and wiring penetrations, and the top plates of interior walls, then washes across the underside of the roof deck.

North Dakota State University Extension puts numbers on the insulation side: attics in northern climates need roughly 15 inches of blown insulation, or about R-50, to be considered properly insulated. Plenty of houses built before the 1990s have half that.

Ventilation helps, but it is the supporting act

Balanced soffit-to-ridge ventilation keeps the roof deck closer to outdoor temperature. FEMA guidance and the Department of Energy’s Building America materials both treat ventilation as a way to carry away heat that made it past the insulation, not as a replacement for sealing and insulating.

One specific warning is worth repeating: University of Minnesota Extension recommends against mechanical or powered attic ventilation as an ice dam solution. A powered fan can depressurize the attic and pull more heated, humid air up through the very ceiling gaps you are trying to stop.

What you can see from the ground

Icicles specifically are a tell, not a decoration. We explain why in icicles on gutters: harmless or warning sign.

Where heat cable fits

Heat cable does not fix the attic. It manages the consequence. In a house where the attic work is expensive, phased, or physically impossible — think a finished attic, a low-slope section, or a complicated valley — cable at the roof edge keeps a drainage path open through the winter while the bigger fix waits for better weather and a better budget.

When we quote, we tell you which category you are in. If your problem is one bathroom fan venting into the attic, you should know that before you spend money on cable.
