How Much Roof Snow Is Too Much?

People judge roof snow by how deep it looks. Weight is what matters, and weight varies enormously with water content. Two feet of dry powder can weigh less than five inches of saturated snow after a rain event. Related: roof snow removal.

Weight, Not Depth
Fresh dry powder runs roughly three pounds per square foot per foot of depth. Wet, settled or rain-soaked snow can run three to four times that. Most residential roofs are engineered for somewhere around twenty to thirty pounds per square foot of live load. That means a roof can carry several feet of powder comfortably and be in trouble under one heavy wet layer that then absorbs rain.
Warning Signs From Inside
The building tells you before the roof does. Doors or windows that suddenly stick, new cracks in drywall or above door frames, visible sagging in a ceiling line, popping or creaking sounds, and sprinkler heads or light fixtures that have shifted downward are all structural signals. Any of those means stop and call — do not go up there yourself.
Which Roofs Are Most at Risk
Low-slope and flat roofs hold everything that lands on them. Porches, garages, carports and additions are frequently framed lighter than the main house. Valleys and the lee side of a ridge collect drift far deeper than the average. Why Clearing Snow Also Stops Ice Dams
