Metal roofs shed snow in sudden sheets — hundreds of pounds releasing at once onto whatever waits below. Retention systems hold the load in place to melt off gradually instead.

Slick Roofs Release All At Once
Snow bonds weakly to metal and slick membranes — a sunny hour or a door slam and the whole slope releases as one sliding slab, taking out gutters, plumbing vents, railings, shrubs, and anything parked or standing in the arc. Retention systems — individual guards patterned across the field, or continuous rail-and-bracket systems at the eaves — hold the blanket in place so it leaves as meltwater, the boring way.
Layout Is Load Math, Not Sprinkles
Retention that’s under-specified rips out under exactly the load it was bought for — layout follows slope, panel type, roof length and regional snow load, with attachment matched to the seam or surface (clamped on standing seam, never through-fastened where the manufacturer forbids it). Priority zones: entries, walks, meters, and the sections we’d otherwise be shoveling for you each February.

Rarely — shingles grip snow. The conversation is metal, slate, and slick membranes, plus the occasional shingle roof over a critical entry.
Will guards damage my standing seam panels?+
Clamp-on systems attach to the seams without a single penetration — the correct hardware for the panel is the whole specification game.
Does held snow overload the roof?+
Roofs are engineered for regional snow load; retention just makes the load leave gradually. Genuinely extreme accumulations are what snow removal is for.
What stops snow from sliding off a metal roof?+
