Deep enough to shrug off aeration and shallow enough to maintain fall to the outlet — grade-dependent, planned before the first shovel.
Do underground drains freeze in winter?
Properly sloped solid pipe empties between events, so there is nothing standing to freeze — the corrugated bellies that hold water are the systems with ice problems.
Can you connect my existing downspouts to new drains?
That is the standard job — adapters at each drop, buried runs to discharge, flow-tested before backfill.
Should downspouts be connected to underground drains?
On flat lots or anywhere surface extensions can’t get water past the foundation zone — yes, it’s the permanent version of the extension across the lawn.
