Cracks Are How Crowns Announce Retirement
Crowns crack from thermal cycling and original sins — too thin, poured flat, mortar instead of concrete, no overhang drip. Water enters hairlines, freezes, widens, and starts feeding the brick core below. The repair ladder: sound crowns with fine cracking get flexible crown sealer; crumbling or badly-built crowns get formed and re-poured properly — sloped to shed, overhung with a drip edge, bond-broken at the flue. A Cheap Lid Versus An Expensive Core
Every season a failed crown runs, water rides down inside the stack — spalling faces, dissolving joints, surfacing as the ceiling stain that gets flashing blamed. Crown repair is the cheapest intervention on the whole chimney precisely because it’s upstream of everything; pair it with a cap over the flue and waterproofing on the faces, and the stack’s water story is over.

Can I just caulk the crack in my crown?
Purpose-made flexible crown sealants exist and work on sound crowns — hardware-store caulk peels in seasons. Crumbling crowns need the re-pour either way.

Decades — correct concrete, slope, and overhang remove the reasons the original failed.
