Mortar is designed to fail before brick — softer by intent, it takes the freeze-thaw punishment so the units don’t. Tuckpointing honors that: failed joints ground out to sound depth, repacked with mortar matched in strength and color, tooled to shed water. Spalls & The Rebuild Line
Faces popped off by internal ice — spalling — mean those bricks are compromised through; they cut out and replace with matched units. When deterioration runs structural across upper courses, honest repair becomes partial rebuild: down to sound masonry, back up correctly, finished with a proper crown. Then waterproofing locks it all in — because repairing masonry without stopping the water is scheduling the sequel.
