The Cosmetic Damage Exclusion: When Metal Roof Dents Get Denied

Cosmetic damage endorsements let carriers deny hail dents on metal roofing and siding when the material still sheds water. Knowing whether you have one changes the whole claim.

The short version

A hail-dented metal roof can be denied outright, and the denial can be entirely valid. The deciding factor is an endorsement most homeowners have never read.

What the endorsement actually excludes

A cosmetic damage endorsement excludes damage that alters appearance without affecting function. On a standing seam or metal panel roof, hail dents that do not breach the coating, compromise the seam or impair drainage fall squarely inside it.

It is usually attached in exchange for a premium reduction, and it is common on metal roofs specifically because insurers know hail dents them without penetrating it.

Dents alone may fall under a cosmetic exclusion. Coating fracture, seam distortion and ponding are functional failures.

Where the functional argument still works

The exclusion stops at function. Document anything that is not purely visual:

  • Coating fracture at the impact point, which starts corrosion
  • Dents at the seam or fastener line that break the weather seal
  • Panel deformation that ponds water rather than shedding it
  • Displaced or split ridge and hip closures

Photograph each with a scale reference and describe the failure mode, not the appearance. “Coating fractured at impact, substrate exposed” is a functional finding. “Roof looks bad” is not.

Common questions

How do I know if I have the endorsement?

+

It appears on the declarations page, often under a form number. Ask your agent directly — they must tell you.

Does it apply to siding too?

+

Frequently, yes. Metal and vinyl siding are commonly included in the same endorsement.

Can I have it removed?

+

Usually at renewal, for a higher premium. It is worth pricing if you live in a hail-prone county.
