The Lineup

3-Tab vs Architectural vs Designer

Flat 3-tab shingles are the budget floor — thinner, shorter-lived, and increasingly rare on quality installs. Architectural (dimensional) shingles like GAF Timberline HDZ laminate two layers for depth, weight, and wind ratings that make them today’s standard. Designer lines mimic slate and shake for high-end curb appeal. We install GAF as our primary line and other major brands on request — and we’ll tell you plainly where extra money buys real life versus just looks.

Why Certification Matters

The Same Shingle Installs Two Different Ways

A shingle’s warranty assumes its spec: nail count and placement, starter courses, valley method, ventilation minimums. Miss them and the paper means nothing. GAF certifies installers precisely so the strongest warranty tiers only ride on installations they’ve vetted — which is the tier we register on our replacements. Same shingle, very different roof.

FAQ

Roofing Questions, Answered Straight

Is GAF Timberline HDZ actually better than other architectural shingles?+

It is the best-selling shingle in North America with class-leading wind coverage when certified-installed; other majors make excellent shingles too, and we install them on request. The install quality gap matters more than the brand gap.

How long do asphalt shingles really last here?+

Architectural shingles in Northeast Ohio realistically deliver 20–30 years depending on ventilation, tree cover, and storm luck — ventilation being the factor homeowners control most.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth it?+

In hail country they can earn insurance premium discounts and shrug off stones that bruise standard shingles — ask your carrier about Class 4 discounts and we’ll price the option.

What are the 3 types of asphalt shingles?+

Strip (3-tab), architectural (dimensional), and luxury/designer — ascending in weight, wind rating, depth and price. Architectural is today’s standard for good reason.

Why are my shingles losing granules?+

Some shed is normal aging; heavy loss in gutters signals UV wear-out or storm bruising — worth a free look to tell which story yours is telling.

What color shingle is best for resale?+

Neutral architectural blends — weathered wood, charcoal, driftwood — photograph well and offend nobody; bold colors are a love-it-or-list-longer choice.

Do darker shingles make your house hotter?+

Marginally at the attic level — ventilation quality moves attic temperature far more than shingle color does.

How many squares is the average roof?+

Most single-family homes run 20–35 squares (a square is 100 sq ft) — the free measure replaces guessing with your actual number.
