An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the roof edge that prevents melting snow from draining. Water backs up behind the dam and can leak through your roof into your home, causing damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and more. Ice dams can cause thousands of dollars in damage if not addressed quickly.

Most roofs can handle 20-25 pounds per square foot, but wet heavy snow weighs more than fluffy snow. Generally, consider removal when accumulation exceeds 12-18 inches, especially if it's wet snow. Signs of concern include sticking doors, visible sagging, or creaking sounds.

Heated cables (heat tape) are installed along roof edges and in gutters. They create channels for melting snow to drain, preventing ice dam formation. Self-regulating cables adjust heat output based on temperature for energy efficiency and safety.
