When an ice dam is dripping water into your living room, you want it gone — fast. But how you remove it matters just as much as how quickly. The wrong approach can crack shingles, tear off gutters, void your warranty, and put you on a ladder over an icy surface. Here's the safe way to remove ice dams, step by step.
Roof gutter covered in thick ice dam and snow buildup.
The Safe Way to Remove an Ice Dam
- Rake the roof snow first. From the ground, use a roof rake to pull snow off the lower three to four feet of roof. Less snow means less meltwater feeding the dam.
- Melt channels through the dam. Roof-safe calcium chloride (not rock salt) in a fabric sleeve laid across the dam melts vertical channels that let trapped water escape. This is a stopgap, not a full fix.
- Use low-pressure steam for full removal. Professional steam equipment melts the entire dam off cleanly without touching the shingles.
- Clear the gutters and downspouts. Once water can drain, the dam can't rebuild as fast.
The Michigan State University Extension recommends roof raking and roof-safe heat cables as the two homeowner-friendly steps — and cautions that nothing replaces fixing the attic insulation and ventilation underneath.
Never do this: Don't chip at ice with a hammer, hatchet, or ice pick. Don't use a pressure washer. Don't pour hot water and let it refreeze. Each of these cracks shingles, damages gutters, and almost always voids your roof warranty — turning a few hundred dollars of removal into thousands in roof damage.
How to Remove Ice Dams From Gutters

Gutters are especially easy to wreck. The metal is thin, and frozen ice locks them to the roof edge. Chipping bends and splits them. The safe approach is steam, which melts the ice out and frees the downspouts so the gutter drains again. If your gutters were already pulling away under the ice weight, you may need follow-up gutter repair.
When to Call a Professional
Call a pro when the dam is thick, when water is already inside your home, when the roof is steep or high, or when ice has built up in the gutters. Professional ice dam removal uses steam to clear the dam in a couple of hours without anyone risking a fall or a damaged roof. For deep snow loads, pair it with roof snow removal so the dam doesn't simply reform.

Stopping Ice Dams From Coming Back
Removal handles the emergency, but the dam will return next freeze unless you fix the cause. The UMass Amherst Building & Construction Technology program stresses that proper insulation and ventilation stop dams at the source. In the meantime, heated roof cables and heated gutter cables keep drainage paths open all winter. Our full winter services cover both removal and prevention.
